NO TO SWEAT

Hyperhidrosis

Sweating is a normal bodily function that occurs, for example, when the outside temperatures climb, we engage in intensive sports or nervousness rises before an important meeting or the like. Even though sweating is something completely natural, we usually find it rather unpleasant and annoying. In people who suffer from so-called hyperhidrosis, sweating occurs particularly strongly - even without external influences such as heat or sport. We show which possible treatments there are for hyperhidrosis in Zurich.

The function of sweating

With the help of sweating, the human body fulfills various important tasks. Through evaporation on the skin surface, sweat regulates the body temperature. It is also an important component in maintaining the skin's own acid mantle. Pathogens and other harmful invaders are thus prevented from entering the body. Sweating also plays a crucial role in detoxifying the body. Metabolic end products, alcohol, decomposition products of medicines and other toxins are removed from the body with sweat.

How does extreme sweating occur?

There are different forms of excessive sweating. In the case of secondary hyperhidrosis, the heavy perspiration can be seen as a concomitant of another underlying disease. Everyone is probably familiar with the fact that the body sweats more when there is a fever. But other diseases such as hyperthyroidism or metabolic diseases (diabetes) can also be the trigger for hyperhidrosis.

In contrast, the causes of primary hyperhidrosis are not clearly understood. The extreme sweating occurs here without the presence of another disease and is also not a consequence of taking medication. A disorder of the autonomic nervous system is assumed as a possible cause, which leads to an overstimulation of the sweat glands.

Hyperhidrosis - which areas can be affected?

Primary hyperhidrosis usually occurs in certain areas of the body and does not affect the entire body. Common areas here are the armpits, the hands, the feet or the face, but the increased sweating is also theoretically possible in other places, although much less frequently.

Botulinum as a remedy for sweating
In addition to detailed counseling, relaxation exercises and special creams and antiperspirants, treatment with botulinum toxin (Botox® for short) is also one of the possible treatment approaches for hyperhidrosis. In its pure form, botulinum toxin is a powerful neurotoxin that disrupts the transmission of stimuli from nerves to the corresponding muscles. For medical and cosmetic treatments, botulinum toxin is highly diluted so that it is an absolutely safe form of treatment when used properly. Botulinum is known above all as a reliable anti-aging agent.

What is the course of treatment with botulinum toxin?

The active ingredient is injected with a very fine needle directly into the area where the extreme sweating occurs. The botulinum toxin is then distributed in the tissue, where it inhibits the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. As a result, there is no longer any stimulus transmission to the sweat glands. If the sweat glands are not overstimulated, the excessive sweating also no longer occurs. Botulinum treatment takes only a few minutes and requires only a local anesthetic. It is therefore a gentle, painless and low-risk alternative to surgical solutions.

Can I not sweat at all afterwards?

Botulinum treatment blocks sweating only in the particular area of the body. In other areas, the person can continue to sweat normally. And this is a good thing, because as mentioned before, sweating performs vital tasks.

However, even in the treated areas, the inhibition of sweating is reversible. Over time, the body naturally breaks down the botulinum toxin again. As a result, the effect of the therapy wears off after about three to six months, because as soon as the botulinum is broken down and the stimulus transmission of the nerves is fully functional again, the increased sweating can also occur again. For a lasting result, it is possible to repeat the treatment with botulinum against hyperhidrosis at regular intervals and thus refresh the effect.
